Fáilte... Welcome...

...to the first edition of our relaunched Newsletter. Every month we aim to provide you with a wealth of content and information on what we have been up to and what we have planned. We will also be sharing tons of free tips and tutorials to help our fellow photographers become the best they can be. We will answer questions if you have any, and will even take any suggestions you might have on future articles, or on tips you'd like covered. Just reply to this newsletter to contact us.

In response to a lot of questions we get about specific images, we will also be picking some favourite images from the back-catalogue, and describing how they came to be. The detail will vary, but it will usually cover everything from concept through all stages of execution to final image, print or digital.

It's probably fair to warn you though, I have a tendency to go off on the occasional rant, so you should expect some of that too!

You get off lightly this month, as we will just focus on some overdue news and a general introduction to let you know what to expect.

Fallen Angels - Exhibition Update

Some of you will remember that The "Fallen Angels Exhibition" had its first showing at the end of last year in Dublin's Eddie Chandler Gallery in association with Dublin Camera Club.

The good news for those of you who didn't get to see it, is that we are sourcing venues to show it again. More details about that next month!

Some info on the Exhibition:

"Fallen Angels" by Michael O'Sullivan is a Fine Art Exhibition which has been many years in the making. It consists of beautiful large format limited edition Fine Art Prints painstakingly selected and produced for the exhibition.

It is distilled from Michael's "Fallen Angels & Lost Souls" series, which is a body of conceptual Fantasy Art which he has been producing since 2010. Michael uses fantasy art photography as a vehicle for his view of the world, and humanity's place within it, drawing on mythology, fairytale, history and religion to impose visual order on the chaos that is the world as he sees it, allowing him to express it and at the same time, help him to understand it.

Each image or set of images explores a theme or themes including Free-will, manipulation, mortality, and many others that Michael admits he struggles with, and that expressing them this way allows him to come to terms with them. This is a very personal body of work, as much a window into Michael's soul as it is a mirror on his world, and he is delighted to invite you to share it.

Dedicated to the memory of Treasa Uí Shúilleabháin.

Want Michael to bring some images to your club/association or college? Michael is a proud member of the Permajet Lecturers Team, and prints exclusively on Permajet Fine Art Papers.

Workshop News!

Click here to go to Workshops page

Great news! In response to a huge amount of requests, we have slotted some more workshops into the calendar. Some have already happened this month, filling up almost immediately, and there are more dates coming up, starting with one in the Drogheda area in September

Location Photography Workshops

We ran a Location Photography workshop on August 27th. It was a foggy day, and the conditions were far from ideal, but we just adapted and managed to get some really great shots despite the challenges. Using lighting as a subtle accent in thick fog gives an extremely moody effect rather than the dramatic effect achieved in more contrasty conditions. In future editions I am hoping we can get workshop participants to share some of their images from the workshops. We had a great time in Owenahincha! Thanks to all who attended for making it such an enjoyable day for me.

In the meantime, here is one of my favourites from the day. 2 lights were used; 1 Softbox to camera right to lift the shadows and counteract the strong overhead natural light, and a kill-spill reflector dish to camera right behind the model to give a subtle edge light.

Renowned as being among the best workshops in the business, we tend to fill most of our workshops from the waiting list. The specific location of each workshop will generally be confirmed closer to the date, as we watch the weather etc. but it will always be in a stunning location, somewhere between West Cork and the Western Suburbs of Cork City. Spaces are always Strictly limited, so Click on the images to reserve your place now on a future workshop, or get in touch to get on the waiting list.

We have one coming up in the Drogheda area in association with Boyne Valley Photographic Club, and it is half full already. It is a full day's workshop on September 17th. Get in touch immediately if you want to secure a place!

Studio Lighting Workshop

As if that's not enough, we also have a Studio based workshop coming up! Like the location workshops, these tend to sell out really quickly. Space is strictly limited, and they are already partly filled with people from the waiting list before we even announce the dates. If you are interested in getting on the list for one of these workshops, then get in touch!

We are looking at linking it to a way that we can give some of you the opportunity to be involved! We've been working really hard behind the scenes with Topher Adam, Dark Beauty's Editor in Chief to make this something really special and unique!

We can't say any more for now, but watch this space!

Canon Experience Days

We are delighted to be working with Canon on some upcoming events, and we are blown over by the demand for these. We just ran one on August 26th at our studio, "Studio Danú" in Cork. We were delighted to be joined for the event by Richard McCarthy, all the way from Sligo. While we were shooting in the studio, Richard shared his phenomenal knowledge on the wireless functionality of the new EOS cameras, covering connectivity, tethering etc. There was lots of Canon's newest gear available for people to play with too.

We have 2 more coming up soon. On September 16th, we are running a print workshop with O'Leary's Camera World for Cork Camera Group and Blarney Photography Club. That will be a full day dedicated to teaching how to prepare images for print, and the best process and steps to take to ensure you get the best prints possible. We will also be demonstrating paper choices, printing images on different paper types to see the difference paper choice can make.

We are doing something similar with other clubs, so if you would like us to do something at your club, get in touch and we will see what we can do!

On September 23rd we will be doing another Studio Experience day at Studio Danu in Cork along with O'Leary's Camera World, so keep an eye out here and on our website for more details as they become available!

We will also be delivering a host of other activities with Canon, including CPS Days, Printing Workshops, DSLR & Photography training days, gear demos and anything else we can think of. We are extremely proud to be working with Canon Ireland on these events. Rest assured, we will share details of up-coming events as they become available.

Studio Demonstrations at Photovision

We will be giving lighting tutorials with the folks from Nicelight at Photovision in Croke Park on Tuesday 5th Sept. We will be there all day, with the first session kicking off at 11:30 and continuing throughout the day. Next Month:  "Behind The Image"

We get a lot of questions asking about how specific images were planned, set up, lit, shot, post-processed etc. etc. so we figured the best thing to do is to share that with everyone here. Do you want to know how any of our images were created? Just drop us a line by replying to the newsletter email. We will pick one each month and break it down in detail!

How does that sound?

Let us know what you think!
